Moneydance 2024, Autumn Update

We are excited to announce the newest update to Moneydance, the world’s most powerful, friendly, and cross-platform personal finance manager. This release brings a suite of enhancements and new features designed to make your financial management more intuitive, efficient, and tailored to your needs.

Key Highlights:

Improved Reminders View: Quickly search and filter your reminders by typing into the quick-search field. You can filter by description, category, amount, and more. Plus, each reminder now displays a summary of its schedule (daily, weekly, monthly, etc.) right in the list for easier tracking.

Advanced Search Enhancements: When searching by description in the Advanced Search window and various reports, you now have the option to include the memo field in your search. This makes finding specific transactions even more straightforward.

Effortless Category Creation: If you enter a category name that doesn’t exist while recording a transaction, Moneydance now prompts you to create it instantly, streamlining your data entry process.

Productivity Boosters: Duplicate transactions quickly with a new keyboard shortcut (Mac: Control-Shift-D, Windows/Linux: Control-Alt-D). Additionally, the Portfolio view now sorts securities case-insensitively for a more organized display.

Enhanced Syncing and Reporting: We’ve improved the syncing process to provide more detailed information and added options to manage your sync settings directly from the Console window. Reports and graphs now display activity indicators during long-running operations, and we’ve refined the date range presets for more accurate fiscal reporting.

Bug Fixes and Performance Improvements:

This update also addresses several bugs to enhance stability and performance, including fixes related to transaction sorting, VAT calculations, investment reporting, and more. We’ve made UI improvements across various windows, ensuring a smoother and more responsive experience.

We are committed to continually improving Moneydance and appreciate your feedback. Thank you for choosing Moneydance to manage your personal finances. Download the latest update (also available on the Mac App Store, and Windows Store) and enjoy these new features today!

Full List of Changes:

  • On the Reminders view, you can now type into the quick-search field to filter the list of reminders, including by fields in scheduled transactions such as description, category, and amount
  • Also on the Reminders view, a summary of each reminder’s schedule (daily, weekly, monthly, etc) is shown in the list next to each reminder
  • In the Advanced Search window, Transaction Filter report, and Investment Transactions reports, when searching by description, there is now a checkbox to also look for the same text in the memo field
  • When typing to enter a category name for a transaction, if there are no categories with the typed text then a button is shown to create a new category with that name
  • Added keystroke (mac: control-shift-D, win/linux: control-alt-D) to duplicate the selected transaction in the register
  • Portfolio view now sorts securities case-insensitively
  • When a downloaded and unconfirmed transaction is selected in a register and the amount of the transaction has been reversed (+ to -, or vice versa) use the edited amount when finding merge candidates
  • Improved appearance of the choose-security window when downloading from Moneydance+ or OFX
  • Save more information from the original source in transactions and securities downloaded via Moneydance+
  • When opening accounts in new windows from a context/right-click menu, offset the window compared to the previous window
  • In the Memorized Graphs and Reports section of the summary screen, you can now right-click the links to choose whether the link (and future clicks) should open the graph or report in a mini window, a new main window, or in the current window.
  • In the Graphs & Reports window, memorized graphs and reports are now shown at the top of their respective sections
  • When attempting to delete a currency or security that is still in use, Moneydance now shows a message indicating where it is used.
  • Fixed a bug which prevented directly opening Moneydance 2015 and prior files that had password encryption enabled
  • Fixed a bug which, when performing a batch date change on multiple transactions, would result in the register not fully re-sorting the changed transactions
  • Fixed a bug in which the Transaction Filter report, when grouping transactions by account or category, would sort transactions within each group by date-entered order instead of date.
  • Fixed a bug in the previous preview build which prevented creating new files
  • Fixed a rounding bug when applying VAT to transactions which resulted in the total amount being changed by one cent when the VAT part of the transaction came to exactly half of one cent
  • Fixed a bug in which duplicating a transaction which had a VAT calculation applied, would lose the VAT calculation status attributes which might cause further editing of that transaction to re-apply the calculation improperly
  • Fixed a bug when syncing mobile data on Windows which could cause updates from a mobile device to be re-applied, even if they had been overridden or deleted on the desktop.
  • Fixed a bug in the portfolio report in which an investment might be shown in a different currency in specific circumstances
  • Added an Analyze Sync Folder utility to the console window menu which will print a listing of files, subfolders, and timestamps found under the sync folder for the current file
  • When first opening a file loaded from a sync service (Dropbox, iCloud Drive, or shared folder), show a progress indicator until the file is completely downloaded.
  • Fixed a bug that could cause invalid “Restored xxxxx” accounts to appear if an initial sync download was not completed before the file was loaded the first time
  • When first opening a file from a sync service, show an option to edit the name of the newly cloned file
  • Show activity indicator when long-running graphs or reports are being generated
  • Fixed a bug in Detailed Cash Flow report, which would not show split entries in which there were multiple splits with the same category and amount in the same parent transaction
  • Fixed bug in Cash Flow report to prevent an error message when no transactions match the report criteria
  • In the Console window, we added options to reset your local data from its sync folder, or vice versa. Please only use this with caution!
  • The Tools -> Reminders window will now either show the Reminders view in the main window, or open a new main window to show a new Reminders view
  • Added an option to disable syncing of mobile data on specific computers, in order to avoid potential (but very unlikely) conflicts
  • Logged more detailed information about syncing processes, included data upload and download stats. Also added a menu item in the Console window to print or copy these stats to the clipboard
  • Improved the formatting of rates and prices (non-fixed-decimal numbers) to show more digits and automatically adjust the number of decimal places shown with very large or very small (absolute value) numbers
  • When changing Moneydance’s internal locale, also adjust the default date and time formats to match
  • Fixed issue where changing between investment account tabs did not refresh the search filter

  • Fixed issue with Transaction Filter report when filtering by cleared/reconciling/uncleared transaction status
  • Improved date range presets so that reports based on fiscal years (or quarters) that end on the last day of a month work as expected on leap years and on months with different numbers of days.

  • Bug fixes, performance improvements, and interface enhancements to Foresight graphs
  • Fixed bug in which check addresses didn’t appear in the check-printing preview of the preferences

  • Fixed bug in which sidebar section expansion states were not remembered after restarts
  • Enabled remove-from-sidebar popup menu for budgets
  • Fixed bug when typing into the search field while the investment bank register was visible, which would switch to the main investment register instead of filtering the bank register.
  • Made the import currency and import security history windows resizeable and prevent some items from being cut off
  • Fixes to cost basis calculation, including avoiding freezing in certain situations
  • Fixed a bug in which the ‘as of’ date was not observed in the Portfolio Report
  • Improve return and tab key handling in historical prices table. Pressing return now saves edits and moves to the same column in the next row. Tabbing now moves to the next column, and to the next row if the cursor is in the last column
  • Fix bug in which windows previously located at position 0,0 on the screen are moved to the center (and possibly sized badly) upon being restored
